2017 Featured Non-Profits:

In the greater Lynchburg area, Meals on Wheels is designed to assist the homebound community by providing a balanced, nutritious, hot lunch five days each week.

In Lynchburg, we operate independently of other organizations, but we have a clear understanding of the value of collaborating with our partner services and reducing duplication of service wherever possible. We constantly strive to streamline processes for our staff and for our recipients while maintaining proper documentation and accountability.

Because we do not accept any state or federal funding, we are not bound by much of the bureaucracy that accompanies those monies. If they meet our other criteria, we serve any adult, regardless of age or income for either an extended or short period of time. This program serves people who need prepared meals due to permanent or temporary disabilities.

In addition, the  Meals on Wheels delivery also provides a reassuring “check-in” to those who live alone. Any unanswered delivery is reported and investigated. Changes in a client’s health or needs are followed up on by Meals on Wheels staff. If appropriate, referrals to family, physician, or community service organizations are made.

The Academy Center of the Arts, anchored by the historic Academy of Music Theatre, is greater Lynchburg’s multi-facility center for arts, culture and community building and occupies 1.25 blocks on Main Street in downtown Lynchburg.   The Academy Center of the Arts, previously known as the Academy of Fine Arts, was formed in 2003 from the merger of the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center and the Academy of Music Theatre, Inc.  Built in 1905 and closed in 1958, the Theatre is one of the few surviving Beaux-Arts style theatres in Virginia.

The Academy Center of the Arts, through the support of BWXT, Areva, Centra Health, and Retail Merchants Associates, is proud to present a new five part concert series in Lynchburg’s downtown Riverfront Park. The concert series will feature national, regional, and local music acts and will continue the Academy’s efforts to serve our community through arts and culture by bringing world class music to our city’s beautiful downtown park.

The series will kick off with the 5th annual Lynchstock Music Festival on April 22nd, 2017. The Academy is excited for this expanded collaboration with the festival and its organizers. With over 30 local bands, musicians, and performers, Lynchstock Music Festival is the largest local music and arts festival in Central Virginia. This year’s festival headliners include the folk rock group Dawes and the hip-hop artist Oddisee.

After this all day kick off event, the Riverfront Park Concert Series will continue with Saturday evening concerts on June 10th, July 8th, August 12th, and September 30th. Each concert will be unique in genre and scope. The Academy also sets out to make these final four concerts as accessible to the public as possible with extremely affordable ticket prices. All concert events will be picnic friendly and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Food and beverage (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) vendors will be onsite. VIP ticket options available.
